AHEAD OF 2027: DAFINONE URGES URHOBO YOUTHS TO EMBRACE CIVILITY IN POLITICS
As we mark this sacred season of Easter, a time that calls for reflection, renewal, and the reaffirmation of our shared values, I wish to address a matter of growing concern within our political space, particularly among our vibrant and energetic youths.
In recent times, I have observed with deep concern the tone and tenor of political engagement across social media and other public platforms. In the bid to demonstrate loyalty and passion for preferred candidates, some of our youths have unfortunately gone overboard, resorting to personal attacks and unguarded remarks against leaders and fellow citizens. This is not who we are as a people. The Urhobo nation is renowned for its respect, dignity, and strong cultural values that uphold honour and mutual regard.
As we approach the 2027 general elections, I make a heartfelt appeal to all Urhobo youths: let us conduct our political campaigns with decorum and maturity. Support your candidates with conviction, and where necessary, critique opposing views—but always do so with civility and respect. We must not allow political differences to tear us apart or destroy the bonds and bridges we have painstakingly built over the years. Beyond politics, we remain brothers and sisters, united by a common heritage and destiny.
Civility in communication is not a sign of weakness; rather, it is a mark of strength and character. It reflects good upbringing, discipline, and refinement. Throughout my political journey, I have remained steadfast in these values. Despite provocations, insults, and unwarranted attacks, I have chosen not to respond in kind. I firmly believe that we must rise above hostility and embody the principles we wish to see in our society.
Let us also remember that in politics, today’s opponent may become tomorrow’s ally. There are no permanent enemies, only shared interests in the progress of our people. Therefore, let us refrain from washing our dirty linen in public or engaging in actions that may bring disrepute to our collective identity.
I urge our youths to lead by example—engage responsibly, speak respectfully, and act with integrity. In doing so, you not only elevate yourselves but also preserve the dignity and unity of the Urhobo nation.
Once again, I wish you all a blessed and peaceful Easter celebration.
Signed:
Senator Ede Dafinone,
Delta Central Senatorial District.
