The Asagba of Asaba, His Royal Majesty, Prof. Epiphany Azinge, SAN, OON, FNIALS, has announced the maiden edition of the Asaba International Road Race, a 10-kilometer event set for October 5, 2025. The event, driven by His Majesty’s passion for sports development and tourism, is expected to attract about 40,000 athletes, both local and international.
Unveiling the details at his Palace on Wednesday, the Asagba said the race — open to amateur, elite, and fun runners — will serve as a catalyst for grassroots sports development, tourism, and community unity. A 5-kilometer road walk will also be held alongside the main race to promote fitness and health.

“This is our community’s contribution to sports development and tourism,” the Asagba declared. “The race will showcase Asaba as the fastest-growing state capital in Nigeria and Africa, pushing our rich cultural heritage to the global stage.”
The Asagba revealed that the event is scheduled to coincide with his first coronation anniversary, making it a dual celebration of sports and culture. “It will be an epoch-making event,” he said, promising that participants will experience Asaba’s modern infrastructure, peaceful atmosphere, and renowned hospitality.
The Asaba International Road Race will feature cash prizes for both male and female athletes across various categories. Nigerian winners stand to earn between ₦1 million and ₦50,000, while indigenous Asaba runners will receive prizes ranging from ₦500,000 to ₦50,000. International athletes will vie for prizes between $5,000 and $1,000, ensuring global competitiveness and inclusivity.
The Chairman of the Asaba Sports Promotion Committee, Ogbueshi Wing Commander Peter Iweze (rtd), praised the Asagba’s vision and support, assuring that the committee is fully prepared to deliver a world-class event. “This race will put Asaba on the map as a sporting hub,” Iweze said, noting the economic boost expected from thousands of visitors.
Consultant for the race, Dr. Moses Nwanze, outlined the route, which will start from Stephen Keshi Stadium (or St. Patrick’s College), passing through Anwai Road, Summit Road, Mariam Babangida Way, Okpanam Road, and concluding at the Cenotaph. Registration will be free, he confirmed, adding that the event will also feature cultural displays and community fanfare.
Spade Nigeria News believes the Asaba International Road Race has the potential to become a flagship sporting event, fostering community spirit, stimulating the local economy, and enhancing Asaba’s global profile. With its emphasis on grassroots development and international inclusivity, this event promises to be a landmark celebration of sports, culture, and unity in Delta State and Nigeria at large.
