Journalists on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, gathered in Asaba for a media parley with the Delta State Commissioner for Economic Planning, Hon. Sonny Ekedayen, who outlined the administration’s roadmap to reposition the state’s economy for sustainable growth and employment generation.
Speaking at his office, Ekedayen said the state government’s heavy investment in infrastructure was deliberate and strategic, aimed at creating an enabling environment for private sector participation.
He noted that Delta’s unique structure, with multiple major towns and urban centres spread across the state, requires sustained infrastructure spending to ensure balanced development.
“You cannot concentrate development in one location and expect others to feel the impact. Infrastructure is the foundation for economic expansion, peace and improved living standards,” he said.

The Commissioner clarified that while government remains the largest employer in the state, it is not structured to directly create mass employment. Instead, he stressed that sustainable job creation must come from the private sector.
According to him, improved road networks, security, and public utilities are already attracting investors. He cited renewed activity at the Delta Special Economic Zone, where the number of operating companies has reportedly increased from fewer than three two years ago to eleven.
Ekedayen urged media practitioners to help amplify accurate economic information, noting that many achievements in the sector are not widely known.
