Former Anambra State governor and immediate past Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, has been arrested in Abuja by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Ngige, a prominent political figure and former federal cabinet member, is currently being questioned by the anti-graft agency. His arrest was confirmed late Wednesday night in a statement issued by his former media aide, Fred Chukwulobe.
Chukwulobe addressed growing speculation on social media suggesting that Ngige had been kidnapped, insisting that the reports were false. He clarified that the former minister voluntarily honoured the EFCC’s invitation and is in safe custody.
He stated:
“Former Governor of Anambra State and immediate past minister of labour and employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, is with the EFCC. More details later.”
Although the EFCC has yet to make an official statement detailing the reason for his arrest, sources familiar with the development say the Commission is probing several financial issues linked to his time in public office.
Ngige has been in the news recently after his convoy came under attack by armed men in Anambra State last month. He was not in the vehicle during the incident, but the attack raised concerns about rising insecurity in parts of the state.
The arrest has sparked fresh conversations among political observers, with many waiting to see what charges if any the EFCC will make public in the coming days.
