A Pan-Delta Civil Society Group, Concerned Deltans For Good Governance, has strongly condemned the arrest of vibrant media personality and prominent good governance activist, Comrade Fejiro Oliver and demanded his immediate and unconditional release from detention.
The fervent call for the unconditional release of comrade Fejiro Oliver, was contained in a statement issued in Asaba, the Delta State capital and jointly signed by the President of Concerned Deltans For Good Governance, Comr. Obus Regha and Secretary: Karo Edor which cited stark implications for freedom of speech in the South South region, following the disturbing news of Comrade Oliver’s arrest, which broke on Friday, September 19, 2025.
Reacting further Comr. Obus Regha condemned the arrest and detention of Comrade Fejiro Oliver describing it as an affront to democracy and human rights.
The statement by Concerned Deltans For Good Governance titled: PROMINENT ACTIVIST FEJIRO OLIVER HELD IN COMMOTION CALLING FOR UNCONDITIONAL RELEASE reads:
“A rising tide of concern sweeps across Delta State following the reported detention of Fejiro Oliver, a vocal advocate for transparency and accountability in governance. Comr. Obus Regha, President of Concerned Deltans For Good Governance, has issued a fervent call for the unconditional release of Oliver, citing stark implications for freedom of speech in the region.
“Fejiro Oliver, known for his trenchant critiques of government actions, was reportedly taken into custody by authorities acting under state government directives. The abrupt move has sent shockwaves through civil society, with many viewing it as a clampdown on dissenting voices.
“Fejiro Oliver is one of our own, a voice for the voiceless and a champion of good governance,” Comr. Regha stated emphatically. “His detention sends a chilling signal to all who dare speak truth to power in Delta State. We demand his immediate and unconditional release.”
“Oliver’s work as an investigative journalist and human rights activist has focused on exposing perceived corruption and governance shortfalls, earning him both praise and scrutiny from various quarters.
“The detention underscores ongoing debates about freedom of expression in Nigeria, a cornerstone of democracy critical for progress and accountability. Stakeholders are watching developments closely, stressing the need for balance between governance and citizens’ rights to speak out.
“This is an affront to democracy and human rights. Fejiro must be freed.
“There has been No official comment available as of press time”.
In a related development, the Delta State Civil Society Coalition also lent its voice to the news of Comrade Oliver’s arrest and detention in a terse comment saying that it Expresses “grave concern” over implications for activism and journalism.”
It could be recalled that a viral news report broke today, September 19, when several media platforms reported that Fejiro Oliver, a renowned Abuja‑based journalist and vocal critic of Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, had been arrested by Operatives of the Force Intelligence Department (FID) and subsequently transferred to Asaba, allegedly on the orders of the Delta governor.
Sources claim Fejiro Oliver was picked up from his office in Garki, Abuja and after being detained at the FID facility, he was taken to the airport and flown to Asaba, the Delta State capital.
