Step-by-Step Guide to Getting Your Tax ID
The process is designed to be simple and accessible, ensuring you can comply with the new law without a hassle.
Step 1: Verify if you already have a Tax ID
Visit the official Joint Tax Board (JTB) TIN Verification Portal at https://tin.jtb.gov.ng.
Select the “Search for TIN” option.
Enter your BVN and Date of Birth to check if a Tax ID has been automatically assigned to you.
Step 2: Register for a new Tax ID (if you don’t have one)
If your search on the verification portal does not yield a result, you will need to register for a new Tax ID.
Go to the JTB TIN Registration Portal by following this link
Select the “Register for TIN” option for individuals.
Fill out the required information, including your BVN, NIN, and other personal details.
Submit the form and follow the instructions to get your Tax ID certificate.
The entire process is free of charge. You can download and print your Tax ID certificate once it is issued. It is highly recommended to complete this process well before the January 2026 deadline to ensure uninterrupted access to your banking and financial services.

Choose individual TIN Reg ( For personal TIN)
Or
Non-individual TIN Reg (For your business, you will need CAC).
Enter your BVN, DOB, First and Last Names.
Enter other required details in the respective fields including an active email address.
Note that you will receive your TIN via your email after a few minutes or after some days which comes in the form of a certificate.
If you do not want to use the JTB App, you can also use your browser to login to the JTB website, follow the steps and register.
Within 24-72hrs you are most likely going to get your TIN certificate on your mail box.
Provided you have a bank account in Nigeria, TIN is a must for you to operate it come 1st January 2026.

ALREADY HAVE REGISTERED FOR A TIN NUMBER BUT I MISPLACED IT, HOW CAN I RETRIEVE IT?

Then,
Enter one of the following:
Your BVN (for personal)
Your CAC registration number (for companies/businesses)
Or your Phone number/NIN
The system will display your TIN if it has already been generated.
You can update your details if there has been changes. If not, verify and print.
But if it doesn’t work for you.
DOING IT OFFLINE.
Visit the Nearest FIRS Office.
Go with a valid ID (NIN, voter’s card, international passport, or driver’s licence).
If it’s a business TIN, remember to go with your CAC certificate.
Provide your Request ID (if you still have it) or BVN.
They can look up your TIN in their system and reprint your TIN certificate.
Note: Request ID is just a temporary reference number the system gives you when you submit your TIN application online.
It’s like a receipt or tracking number to follow up on your application. It is not your TIN.
