Kennedy Kanma, the Labour Party senatorial candidate in Delta North, Delta State, in the last general elections, has called for strengthened initiatives to overcome ignorance and advance education as the cornerstone of a fair society.
Kanma, a lawyer and advocate of social justice, made the call in Lagos during an interactive session with some journalists as part of the activities marking this year’s UNESCO’s International Literacy Day which holds every September 8.
“On this World Literacy Day, I reiterate my firm commitment to eradicating illiteracy and empowering every citizen with the gift of knowledge. Literacy is not just a fundamental right, it is also the foundation of progress, equality, opportunity and inclusion.
“Like every society that depends on education and knowledge for survival, we must recognize basic education as the bedrock of progress, equality and sustainable development. Therefore, as a country, we need intensify our efforts to provide quality education for all, especially the marginalized and underserved communities.
“After all, we all know that ignorance is not only a barrier to self-fulfillment, it is also a hinderance to development. But through collective actions, we can break these barriers and build a prosperous and inclusive future that we all want.
“I am happy to announce that in Delta North, my own corner of Nigeria, I am already making some efforts to make books accessible, encourage reading, and promote literature with the support of my literary friends and dedicated volunteers.
“I am also working towards establishing ICT centres across our senatorial district, as I fully recognize the importance of digital access in this age where the world has truly become a global village.
“For me, I believe that every contribution to education goes a long way in shaping a more conscious citizenry and building a better, more just society.
“You will agree with me that there is much work to be done among our young people when it comes to literacy. As I said before, the youth must transform every digital platform at their disposal that offers information to a centre of learning by fully utilizing such a medium. That is the only way we can truly overcome ignorance.
“Therefore, let us pledge today to use literacy as a tool for personal growth, national advancement and mobilization against irresponsible and unfocused leadership in our country. That, I believe is the only way to ensure accountability, inclusion, progress and a better future for all.
“I strongly believe that with literacy, we can ensure that no one is left behind on the path to enlightenment and success as we work towards building the Nigeria of our dreams.”
