April 27, 2025, marked a transformative day for residents of the Owhodokpokpor-Ogor community in Ughelli North Local Government Area, Delta State, as 500 women were enrolled into the Delta State Contributory Health Scheme, guaranteeing them free healthcare for one year.
The initiative was made possible through the generous sponsorship of Hon. Kelly Emuoghenerue Oghenekevwe, Executive Director of Finance and Administration at the Delta State Board of Internal Revenue. His support underscores a strong commitment to improving the well-being of vulnerable women in his community.
At the enrollment event, Dr. Isaac Akpoveta, Director-General and CEO of the Delta State Contributory Health Commission (DSCHC), lauded Hon. Oghenekevwe’s compassion and dedication to public service. He encouraged other well-meaning Deltans to emulate the gesture, noting that it aligns perfectly with the goals of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s MORE Agenda, which is focused on inclusive and accessible healthcare.
Hon. Oghenekevwe expressed gratitude to Governor Oborevwori for establishing platforms that empower individuals to support the less privileged. He also acknowledged the efforts of Dr. Akpoveta and the DSCHC in driving the Indigent Enrollee Adoption Initiative, which he said is improving health outcomes across the state.
Explaining his motivation, Hon. Oghenekevwe described the enrollment as a personal contribution to community development. He highlighted the decision to prioritize women in this phase due to their heightened vulnerability and assured that future enrollments would include male beneficiaries as well.
The event was attended by community leaders, including political figure Chief Anthony Okpugwarah, who praised the initiative as both commendable and inspiring. Beneficiaries expressed deep appreciation and offered prayers for their sponsor’s continued success.
A key moment of the day was the distribution of health insurance cards to the new enrollees. Hon. Oghenekevwe was also honored with the Health Insurance Ambassador Award in recognition of his exceptional commitment to community health.
