The 104th Council Meeting of the University of Benin Alumni Association has commended the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Benin, Professor Edoba B. Omoregie, SAN, for what it described as visionary leadership and transformative initiatives aimed at repositioning the institution for greater excellence.
In a communiqué, signed by Emmanuel Oriazuwa, Esq. (President), Dcn. Benjamin O. Omere (Secretary-General), and Ms. Tosan Ganranwei (Public Relations Officer), was issued at the end of the Council’s meeting held at the TETFund Building, University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), on Saturday, February 28, 2026. The Council lauded the Vice-Chancellor for initiating and successfully inaugurating the University of Benin Trust Development Fund.
The fund, inaugurated on February 16, 2026, by the Chairman of the Governing Council, Professor Shaibu Umaro, with Pastor (Dr.) Osagie Ize-Iyamu as Chairman, was described as a strategic intervention mechanism designed to mobilize resources for infrastructural development and academic advancement. The Alumni Council called on members and friends of the University to rally support for the sustainability and success of the fund.
The Council further commended Professor Omoregie for the successful matriculation of 15,077 undergraduate students and the seamless introduction of a two-stream admission system for postgraduate programmes per academic session. It noted that the peaceful and stable academic calendar under the current administration reflects prudent management and commitment to institutional harmony.
Beyond university matters, the Alumni Council expressed concern over the deteriorating condition of federal roads across the country, urging the Federal Government to take urgent steps to address the hardship faced by commuters and road users.
The Council also decried the rising spate of insecurity nationwide and appealed to the Federal Government to intensify efforts toward restoring safety and public confidence.
In the same vein, the Council appreciated the Chief Medical Director of UBTH, Professor (Mrs.) Idia Ize-Iyamu, for providing what it described as an ambient and conducive environment for the successful hosting of the 104th Council meeting. Members equally congratulated her on her appointment and wished her a successful tenure.
The Alumni body further extended gratitude to the Esama of Benin, Chief (Dr.) Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion, CFR, for warmly receiving members of the University of Benin Alumni Association at his residence, describing the gesture as a reaffirmation of his longstanding support for education and the University community.
The 104th Council Meeting reaffirmed the commitment of the University of Benin Alumni Association to supporting the growth, stability, and global competitiveness of their alma mater, while also remaining engaged in national discourse on issues affecting Nigerians.
