After a demanding week behind office desks, government files and policy meetings, Delta State civil servants now have something new to look forward to every first Friday of the month—a chance to unwind, reconnect and simply enjoy themselves.
In a landmark move to place workers’ welfare alongside productivity, the Head of Service, Dr. (Mrs.) Mininim Oseji, on Friday launched the maiden edition of the “Thank God It’s Friday” (TGIF) initiative and officially declared open the Staff Club at the Head of Service Office Complex in Asaba.
The atmosphere was one of excitement and celebration as officers gathered to witness the birth of what many described as a refreshing chapter in the state’s public service. The event blended official proceedings with laughter, music, friendly games and social interaction, offering civil servants a rare opportunity to relax after the pressures of the work week.
“This is more than recreation,” Dr. Oseji declared. “It is about building a happier, healthier and more united public service. A motivated workforce is a productive workforce, and our officers deserve opportunities to relax, bond and refresh their minds after serving the state diligently.”
She explained that the initiative was conceived to sustain the momentum, unity and renewed enthusiasm generated during the recently concluded 2026 Public/Civil Service Week celebration.
Recognising the need for a permanent recreational centre for workers, the Head of Service announced that the Staff Club within her office complex would temporarily serve public officers across ministries, departments and agencies until the proposed Delta State Civil Service Club is completed.
She recalled her appeal to Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori to revive and complete the long-awaited Civil Service Club project located within the Olorogun Felix Ibru Secretariat Complex.
“I remain optimistic that His Excellency, who has consistently demonstrated his commitment to workers’ welfare, will grant this request. When completed, the Civil Service Club will become a befitting home for social, recreational and professional engagements for public servants,” she said.
The monthly TGIF programme promises to transform the social life of the Delta State Public Service. Every first Friday, officers will have free access to the club upon presentation of their government identity cards, creating an avenue for relaxation outside the formal work environment.
To keep the atmosphere lively, participants will enjoy a wide range of recreational activities, including table tennis, chess, ayo, ludo, whot, draught, movie screenings, live saxophone performances, music and dance.
Beyond entertainment, the initiative is expected to foster stronger interpersonal relationships among officers, encourage teamwork, reduce workplace stress and enhance overall staff morale.
Many civil servants who attended the inaugural event praised the initiative as one of the most worker-friendly reforms introduced in recent years, describing it as a welcome departure from the routine pressures of government service.
For many of them, the programme represents more than an evening of games and music—it is a recognition that behind every government file is a human being whose well-being matters.
With the successful launch of “Thank God It’s Friday,” the Office of the Head of Service has once again reinforced its commitment to building a modern public service where excellence in service delivery goes hand in hand with the welfare, happiness and personal development of the workforce.
