The University of Ibadan Alumni Association (UIAA), Asaba Chapter, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for appointing Dr. Timi Ayiba Tonye, Esq., a proud alumnus of the University of Ibadan, as the Executive Director (Corporate Services) of the newly established South-South Development Commission (SSDC).

In a letter presented to the Senate on Thursday by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Tinubu sought confirmation of the appointees to the boards of the North-Central, South-West, and South-South Development Commissions. Dr. Tonye was named among other distinguished individuals to spearhead the development of Nigeria’s geo-political regions.

Reacting to the news, UIAA Asaba Chapter Chairman, Barr. J.I. Kagho, praised Dr. Tonye’s appointment as well-deserved, citing his loyalty, service, and passion for the growth of both the alumni community and the country.

“Dr. Timi Tonye has been a steadfast advocate of the values of the University of Ibadan. His leadership, commitment, and ambassadorial presence have greatly enhanced the UIAA’s public image,” Kagho said.
The Chapter also recalled one of Dr. Tonye’s impactful lectures during UIAA Warri Chapter’s 65th Founder’s Day Luncheon, where, as Guest Lecturer and then-Commissioner for Special Duties at DESOPADEC, he spoke on “Re-inventing Nigeria Without Oil and Gas.” He emphasized the urgency for economic diversification, famously remarking: “Petrol is like a girlfriend—you knew from the start she would leave you. Leave her before she breaks your heart.”

Kagho described Dr. Tonye as “a principled steward of resources, a tireless workaholic, and a champion of collaborative leadership,” expressing confidence in his ability to contribute meaningfully to the SSDC’s mandate in line with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
“The UIAA Asaba Chapter extends heartfelt gratitude to President Tinubu for this thoughtful appointment that reflects his commitment to inclusive governance and strategic national development,” he added.

The SSDC board, chaired by former House of Representatives Deputy Speaker Chibudom Nwuche, also includes Usoro Akpabio as Managing Director, alongside other members representing the six South-South states and additional geopolitical zones.

With Dr. Timi Tonye at the helm of Corporate Services, stakeholders are optimistic about the Commission’s direction and the transformational impact it is poised to have across the region.
