Sir Chinyeaka Christian Ohaa, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) governorship candidate in Enugu State, has declared support for former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, saying Nigeria’s development requires leaders committed to accountability, purposeful governance and service to the people.
Ohaa made the declaration at the NDC Enugu town hall meeting, where he also unveiled a vision for what he described as a “new direction” for Enugu State, anchored on economic growth, job creation, infrastructure development, quality healthcare and improved educational opportunities.
The governorship candidate said the time had come for Enugu to embrace leadership that would move beyond political promises and deliver measurable results to the people.
According to him, the state’s future cannot be secured through rhetoric alone, stressing that purposeful governance requires vision, courage and practical policies capable of transforming the lives of citizens.
Ohaa: Enugu Needs Leadership That Delivers
Ohaa argued that Enugu deserves a government that puts the welfare of its people at the centre of its policies, insisting that government must be judged by the tangible impact it makes in the lives of ordinary citizens.
He identified job creation, sustainable economic policies, infrastructure, healthcare and education as key areas requiring urgent attention if the state is to fully realise its economic potential.
The NDC candidate particularly highlighted the need to create opportunities for young people, saying the energy, creativity and talents of the state’s youthful population must be harnessed as a driving force for economic development.
He maintained that responsible leadership should not end with election promises, but must be reflected in policies and programmes whose results can be measured by the people.
Accountability Must Be Non-Negotiable
Ohaa also placed accountability and transparency at the heart of his vision for Enugu, saying public resources must be deployed in ways that produce visible benefits for citizens.
He stressed that people-centred governance was essential to rebuilding public confidence in government and ensuring that taxpayers’ resources were used for the collective good.
According to him, government should be a vehicle for improving the lives of citizens rather than an avenue for political patronage.
He argued that citizens should be able to point to concrete improvements in their communities and confidently say that government is working for them.
Why Peter Obi
Explaining his support for Peter Obi, Ohaa said the former Anambra governor’s vision of leadership aligns with the principles he believes are necessary for Nigeria’s development.
He linked his endorsement to the broader need for purposeful leadership, accountability and national development, stressing that the country’s challenges require leaders willing to place the collective interest above personal and political considerations.
Ohaa’s position also forms part of his broader campaign message for a change in the way governance is approached in Enugu State.
He said his ambition is driven by the desire to see a prosperous Enugu where government policies translate into better living conditions, stronger economic opportunities and improved public services.
‘A New Direction for Enugu’
The NDC candidate said his proposed new direction would focus on unlocking the state’s economic potential while creating an environment in which businesses, workers, young people and communities can thrive.
He emphasised that development must be people-centred and sustainable, with government taking deliberate steps to expand economic opportunities and improve essential services.
Ohaa further maintained that leadership driven by integrity and service could restore citizens’ confidence in government and position Enugu for greater economic and social development.
He said his vision extends beyond the immediate political contest, describing it as part of a broader aspiration for a better Nigeria where leadership is measured by competence, accountability and the positive difference it makes in the lives of the people.
As political activities gather momentum in Enugu, Ohaa’s message is increasingly focused on leadership, accountability and delivery, with the NDC candidate presenting his proposed “new direction” as an alternative approach to governance in the state.
