It was an afternoon of football, music, glamour and celebration in Warri, Delta State, yesterday, as a novelty football match between the Sheriff Junior Oborevwori Care Foundation Team and the Prince Temisan Emiko Team added excitement and colour to activities marking the fifth coronation anniversary of His Majesty, Ogiame Atuwatse III, CFR, the Olu of Warri.
The highly entertaining encounter, played at the Shell Football Field, Ogunu, Warri South Local Government Area, attracted a large crowd of football enthusiasts, traditional institution stakeholders, dignitaries, youths and residents, who turned out to celebrate the monarch and witness an impressive gathering of some of Nigeria’s most recognisable football personalities.
The revered Warri monarch was present at the Ogunu Shell Field to watch the game from beginning to the end.
The match provided a rare opportunity for former Nigerian internationals, football administrators and other prominent personalities to return to the pitch, rekindling memories of their playing days while contributing to the festive atmosphere surrounding the Olu of Warri’s fifth year on the throne.
Among the distinguished football personalities who featured in the novelty encounter were Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko; former Nigeria Football Federation President, Amaju Pinnick; former Super Eagles captain and Olympic gold medallist, Nwankwo Kanu; former Super Eagles forward; Daniel Amokachi, former African Footballer of the Year, Victor Ikpeba; former international Edema Fuludu; Obafemi Martins; former Super Eagles coach and captain, Augustine Eguavoen; Mutiu Adepoju; Christian Obodo, and former Super Eagles goalkeeper Ike Shorunmu among others.
