As Nigerians commemorate the 2026 Democracy Day, Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori and Senator Ede Dafinone have called on citizens to remain steadfast in their commitment to democratic values, national unity, and active participation in governance, expressing confidence that the country is on the path to greater prosperity.
In a Democracy Day message issued on Thursday through his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, Governor Oborevwori congratulated Nigerians on the historic occasion and commended their unwavering dedication to constitutional governance despite prevailing socio-economic challenges.
The governor described June 12 as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s democratic evolution, noting that the date symbolizes the courage, resilience, and determination of Nigerians who fought for democratic rule and justice.
According to him, the annual celebration provides an opportunity for both leaders and citizens to reflect on the nation’s democratic progress, strengthen institutions, and recommit themselves to building a more united and prosperous country.
Oborevwori maintained that democracy remains the most effective system of government because it guarantees citizens the right to participate in governance while promoting accountability, transparency, and the rule of law.
He urged Nigerians to continue supporting democratic institutions and elected leaders, stressing that peace, tolerance, and national cohesion remain essential ingredients for sustainable development.
The governor expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future, saying ongoing reforms and the commitment of leaders across the federation would ultimately deliver positive outcomes for the people.
“On this Democracy Day, I congratulate all Nigerians and commend their steadfast belief in democratic governance. We must remain hopeful and united as a nation. With collective effort, patriotism and commitment to national development, greater days are certainly ahead for our country,” Oborevwori stated.
He also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to delivering the dividends of democracy through people-oriented projects and programmes under the MORE Agenda, aimed at improving the welfare and living standards of Deltans.
Similarly, Senator Dafinone, in his Democracy Day message to constituents and Nigerians, described June 12 as a historic symbol of the sacrifices, resilience, and collective determination of Nigerians in the pursuit of democratic governance, justice, and national development.
The lawmaker noted that Nigeria’s democratic journey since 1999 has recorded steady growth despite numerous challenges, emphasizing that democracy remains the best platform for accountability, citizen participation, and peaceful political change.
He urged Nigerians to remain committed to strengthening democratic institutions and called for continued support and prayers for the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu as it implements reforms aimed at repositioning the country for economic stability and sustainable development.
While acknowledging the temporary hardships associated with some economic policies, Dafinone expressed confidence that the reforms would yield long-term benefits and place Nigeria on a stronger footing.
The senator also encouraged citizens, particularly those in Delta Central Senatorial District, to actively participate in the democratic process by registering and obtaining their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) ahead of future elections.
He stressed that voting remains one of the most powerful tools for influencing good governance and shaping the nation’s future.
Dafinone thanked the people of Delta Central for their continued support and confidence in his representation, while also appreciating their backing of Governor Oborevwori’s administration and the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Looking ahead to the 2027 general elections, he urged the people of the district to remain politically engaged and united, insisting that Delta Central must continue to play a strategic role in national politics and development.
Both leaders, in their separate messages, underscored the importance of unity, patriotism, democratic participation, and collective responsibility, expressing hope that Nigeria’s democratic journey would continue to deliver peace, progress, and prosperity for all citizens.
