As Nigerians commemorate Democracy Day, the Member representing Oshimili South State Constituency in the Delta State House of Assembly, Hon. Bridget Anyafulu, Esq. has called on citizens to remain committed to the ideals and principles of democracy, describing June 12 as a symbol of courage, sacrifice, and the collective determination of Nigerians to shape their own destiny.
In her Democracy Day message, Anyafulu, who also serves as Chairman of the House Committee on Housing, Women Affairs, Humanitarian Support Services and Girl Child Development, said the occasion offers an opportunity to reflect on Nigeria’s democratic journey and renew commitment to justice, equity, and good governance.
According to the lawmaker, Nigeria’s democratic experience has significantly strengthened national unity, expanded political participation, and created avenues for citizens to influence governance through peaceful and constitutional means.
She noted that despite the challenges confronting the nation, democracy remains the most dependable platform for safeguarding the rights and freedoms of the people.
“Democracy has given Nigerians a voice. It has strengthened our institutions and provided citizens the opportunity to shape government through peaceful and constitutional means,” she stated.
Anyafulu observed that democratic governance has over the years fostered greater accountability, transparency, and responsiveness in public service, making elected leaders more answerable to the people and strengthening the relationship between government and citizens.
She further highlighted the gains of democracy in promoting press freedom, civic engagement, and inclusiveness in governance.
“Today, more Nigerians are participating in governance than ever before. This is one of the greatest gains of democracy,” she said.
Speaking on developments in Delta State, the legislator said democracy has accelerated growth through sustained investments in key sectors, including road infrastructure, healthcare, education, youth empowerment, and economic development.
She explained that democratic governance has empowered communities to attract development projects through active representation and citizen participation, leading to visible improvements in the quality of life of residents.
Anyafulu commended Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, for sustaining development initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of Deltans.
“The dividends of democracy are evident in our communities through ongoing infrastructure projects, educational advancement, healthcare improvements, and empowerment programmes,” she noted.
The lawmaker also emphasized that democracy has created opportunities for women and young people to play more active roles in leadership and public service, describing inclusive governance as one of the most significant achievements of Nigeria’s democratic journey.
She urged political leaders across the country to prioritize the interests of the people above personal and partisan considerations, stressing that the success of democracy depends on integrity, accountability, and selfless service.
“Democracy is not merely about elections. It is about delivering hope, opportunities, security, and development to the people,” she added.
Anyafulu further called on Nigerians to remain peaceful, law-abiding, and steadfast in supporting efforts aimed at strengthening democratic institutions, while encouraging citizens to continue participating actively in governance for the advancement of the nation.
She expressed optimism that with sustained commitment to democratic principles, Nigeria would continue to make progress in building a more inclusive, prosperous, and united society.
