The Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to Delta State Governor and pioneer Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, (NUJ) Ughelli Correspondents Chapel, Sir Festus Ahon, and the leadership of the chapel, on Friday, paid a condolence visit to the family of late Comrade George Igbi at Orerokpe, Okpe Local Government Area.
Comrade George Igbi was the pioneer
Vice Chairman of Ughelli Correspondents Chapel.
Igbi, a native of Okobia community in Okpe Local Government Area, died in the early hours of Thursday, May 14, 2026, after a brief illness at the age of 59.
Speaking at the family home of Igbi, Sir Ahon described the late George Igbi as a dedicated member of the union who gave his best during the chapel’s formative years.
He said, “We are here as members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists and I am also here as the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor of Delta State.
“When I was Chairman of NUJ, your father was my vice and he was such a loyal person, and a very trusted friend who added so much value to the chapel when we were creating it.
“He was there during the formative period and was very supportive. He played a major role in establishing the Ughelli Correspondents Chapel.
“Even after our tenure, he was still very much in touch with me as a friend and as a boss and it got to a point where I was relating with him as a brother not even as a colleague anymore.
“His death is shocking and painful but there is nothing we can do at this point. We cannot question God.
“We urge you to take heart and ensure that you keep his legacies and ensure that you represent that thing which he believed in.
“Do your best to uphold the name of the family. Your father stood for integrity and we also urge you to stand for integrity.
“On behalf of my principal, the Governor of the State, His Excellency, Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori, and on behalf of the union, I express our sincere condolences to you and your family. We pray God to guide and bless you in this period of grief.”
Meanwhile, the chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Ughelli correspondent chapel, Comrade Matthias Ogbagah on behalf of the chapel expressed deep shock over the passing on of the chapel’s pioneer vice chairman and also the Auditor of the chapel until his death, Comrade George Igbi.
“The union commiserated with the Igbi family, members of NUJ Ughelli Chapel and the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council.
The death of comrade George Igbo is a painful loss to the Ughelli Correspondent Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council”.
He appealed to the family of Igbi to carry the chapel along in their planning.
Until his death, late comrade George Igbi was the Auditor of Ughelli Correspondents Chapel of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).
In his remarks, the eldest son of the deceased, Mr Morrison Igbi, thanked the Chief Press Secretary and the Ughelli Correspondents Chapel for the visit.
In the entourage with Sir Festus Ahon were Comrade Mathias Ogbagah, Chairman NUJ, Ughelli Correspondents Chapel, Comrade Sunday Apah, Comrade Gabriel Choba, Comrade Andrew Unutame, Comrade Efidhere Omamuzo and Comrade Choice Grandball.
