Prominent political leaders in Delta State have paid glowing tributes to former President-General of the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU), Chief Engr. Joe Omene, as he marks his 80th birthday anniversary, describing him as an exceptional leader whose contributions to the Urhobo nation, Niger Delta region, and national development remain enduring.
Leading the tributes, Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, congratulated the elder statesman on reaching the milestone age, praising his decades of dedicated service, principled leadership, and unwavering commitment to the advancement of the Urhobo people.
In a statement issued on Saturday by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, the governor described Chief Omene as a respected voice in the Niger Delta and a distinguished leader whose impact transcends ethnic and regional boundaries.
Oborevwori noted that the Mosogar-born leader had, over the years, demonstrated uncommon courage, wisdom, and dedication in championing the interests of the Urhobo nation and promoting peace and development across Delta State.
“On behalf of the government and people of Delta State, I congratulate our great leader, Chief Joe Omene, as he clocks 80 years on June 20,” the governor stated.
He commended the former UPU President-General for his invaluable contributions to the preservation of Urhobo identity, the promotion of unity among the people, and his role in fostering socio-economic progress in Delta State.
According to the governor, Omene’s exemplary leadership and commitment to justice have earned him admiration and respect from people across the state and beyond.
Oborevwori also prayed for God’s continued blessings upon the octogenarian, wishing him good health, strength, and many more years of fruitful service to humanity.
Joining in the celebration, Senator Ede Dafinone described Chief Omene as a symbol of selfless service, patriotism, and dedication to the Urhobo cause.
In a congratulatory message issued on behalf of the people of Delta Central Senatorial District, Dafinone said the former UPU leader had played a pivotal role in preserving and promoting Urhobo culture, traditions, values, and identity.
The senator recalled Omene’s tenure as President-General of the UPU, noting that his leadership came at a critical period in the history of the Urhobo nation and helped strengthen the unity, dignity, and progress of the ethnic nationality.
“Chief Engr. Joe Omene’s contributions to the preservation and promotion of Urhobo culture, identity, values, and traditions remain commendable. His leadership of the UPU and his advocacy for the unity, progress, and dignity of the Urhobo people at a critical time in our history are commendable,” Dafinone stated.
